Buying An iPhone

The story of my iPhone purchase, joys, misconceptions and splendid outcome!

I have been after an iPhone for the last six months, the reason it took so long has more to do with family, jobs, and moving to another state more then anything else. Below is my story:

This story starts in New York City. The only way to procure a phone legally was to visit the Apple stores that until the last month before I moved, you had to be the first one in line at 7 AM. Not much for lines or special trips with a family nor could I seem to ever make the time needed.

The next leg of the journey finds me in Palo Alto, CA on business, no kids, no family, time for the score. I thought this is the perfect place to purchase an iPhone at the Apple Store home of Silicon Valley. I went in the store and inquired, "yeah it takes 15 minutes or less I was told". One of the sales staff with an uber cool haircut directed me to a kiosk and told me it would be faster for me to enter my own information. And so I began, hunched over entering in Mac forms while he literally threw up and down an iPhone in a box at my side. Got to the form where I was supposed to transfer my old cell number to the precious iPhone. That was the stopper, Virgin Mobile could not find my account number and I had a meeting to go to... so my cool haired friend dropped the phone on the counter and I left empty handed.

Next stop, new residence Madison WI. Home is where the heart is. Same line at the AT&T store, "yes, it will take 15 minutes to purchase". While I wait with my 4 year old, I am up-sold and cross-sold extended warranties and a belt clip that costs more then my belt. This entire 15 minute affair took almost an hour for the AT&T folks to get it right on the computer with my daughter in arm.

The moment finally arrives:

I said to the sales person, "That is it?"

Yes, he replied, "iPhone, wall plug, USB cable and you get headphones for free with a built in microphone."

Joy: First Use!

Misconception: 15 Minutes to acquisition

Splendid Outcome: Liberating device, crystal clear audio, everything I have wanted since the 90's in a nice package

More to come............
